| Chad accepts international probe
The decision came after Deby's meeting with his French counterpart, Nicolas Sarkozy, in the Chadian capital of Ndjamena. Sarkozy, on an African tour with wife, Carla Bruni, made a brief stop in Chad to persuade Deby to accept an international investigation into the alleged crackdown on political dissidents. Weeks earlier France helped deliver the country from a rebel attack on its capital. Rights groups have charged that the government declared a state of emergency on February 14 as an excuse to terrorise peaceful political opponents. 'Credible probe' Sarkozy had said he wanted a "credible" international commission to probe the whereabouts of two political opponents who had gone missing since the coup attempt.
Oroville's Own: Ray Peel
At 88, Ray Peel wrote a book about his 50 years as a pilot dancing on the edge of crazy. The idea for a book came when Ray decided to clean out a closet where he had been storing junk for many years. While cleaning, he found his old pilot's logs, and the cleaning came to a halt. "As I scanned through the pages, I relived exciting moments of my life," Ray wrote in the introduction to his book. "I remember an old flying friend saying to me, 'Ray, you are going to find out that flying is 90 percent pleasure and 10 percent pure panic.'" The entries in Ray's logs validated his friend's statement and inspired the name of the book, "Flying is 90 Percent Pleasure and 10 Percent Pure Panic: My 50 years as a pilot dancing on crazy." The book is a collection of small stories, almost like vignettes, of some of the highlights of his flying years along with the scares.
Melting ice gives D.M. water lousy flavor
Stubborn river ice has made conditions perfect for an annual rite of late winter in Des Moines: lousy tasting water. Des Moines Water Works officials have been forced to pump more chlorine into tap water to counter high ammonia levels in the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers, two major sources of drinking water. Randy Beavers, interim general manager of the utility, said the problem is the leaves and other plant material that decompose in the rivers when they are covered with ice. .
U.S. security turning border into parking lot, envoy warns
WASHINGTON U.S. Customs and Border Protection should review and reduce excessive security measures at the Canada-U.S. line or risk turning it into a parking lot, Ambassador Michael Wilson told the agency Wednesday. Idling trucks on both sides of the border aren't secure or profitable, he said, and fees are being slapped several times on the same products as parts travel back and forth during manufacturing. .
South Carolina Democratic Primary Coverage - Saturday, January 26, 6 ...
NBC's Kevin Corke, meantime, is at Jillian's Restaurant, Columbia, South Carolina, the Edwards campaign in the senator's home birth state, is there. And that is where Kevin will be joining us throughout the evening. Kevin, good evening to you. KEVIN CORKE, NBC CORRESPONDENT: Keith, good evening to you. I think it is interesting to just take a look around Jillian's. I think there is a bit of excitement here because they just don't know. They don't know. Did he connect with the voters like he had hoped to? Would the fact that he is a native son really pay off today? But I also think there is an unease here, because the fact of the matter is, if not here, where? If not now, when? In the case of John Edwards, he has got to show some momentum. And this is a place where certainly he would have some advantages to do that, because some of our pre-election polling seemed to suggest that Edwards is a guy who seems to be taking advantage of or at least benefiting from the ongoing Obama-Clinton spat.
