Spirits high at wine festival

Revellers at the 25th annual Marlborough wine festival have not let Blenheim's water crisis dampen their fun.

Local residents are boiling drinking water after e-coli bacteria was found in the town's supply. But while that has meant plenty of boiling for locals, the only thing boiling at Brancott Estate was the temperature.

"We're on a different supply here to town, so we've put water filters on all the drinking water today, just to to be absolutely safe and sure," says organiser Tom Trolove.

Festival goers could relax and enjoy the music, the food, the atmosphere and the wine, with some coming from as far away as Germany.

"It brings together people who enjoy wine and food and brings them together in a festive occasion. It's just fantastic," says Jamie Marfell from Montana Wines.

A Dose of Economics for Healthier Pharmaceutical Production

Efforts to increase the poor's access to medicines are nothing new. Buying products from quality manufacturers and urging these manufacturers to lower prices for the poorest markets have worked best; other policies have largely failed or are still on the drawing board. But the latest strategy--to encourage local pharmaceutical production--could also be entirely counterproductive. It could lower drug quality and increase incentives for protectionism, ultimately reducing access. Production of drugs in poorer countries can make sense, but it must be driven by entrepreneurs responsive to market incentives. Unsuccessful local businesses must be allowed to fail, not be propped up by aid groups that support local production without considering its long-term economic consequences. This would encourage better, more profitable businesses, which will be the engines of growth for poor nations.

Port Angeles man accused of Craigslist scam

Police have arrested a Port Angeles man for stealing thousands from users of the Web site Craigslist.org.

Investigators said the man used bad checks to buy diamond rings on the site, scamming a number of victims from Seattle to Everett.

It all began with one engagement ring. A Snoqualmie man posted an ad on Craigslist, asking for $5,400 for the ring.

Police say the Port Angeles man saw the posting as an opportunity to cash in.

"He portrayed himself as a jewelry broker from Elegance Jewelry Design and so the victim met with him (and) they looked at the ring through a jewelry glass," said Rebecca Munson with the Snoqualmie Police Department.

The two struck a deal at $5,200 and the suspect wrote the seller a business check.
